Equinor, partners discover oil near Troll field in Norway

Equinor and three of its partners have discovered oil and gas at production licence 923 near Norway’s Troll field in the North Sea. The three partners are DNO Norge, Petoro and Wellesley Petroleum.

Operator Equinor holds 40% stake in the licence, while Petoro, DNO and Wellesley Petroleum each hold 20% interests.

Equinor revealed that this is the first discovery made this year, and the licence is expected to contain to 44-69 million barrels of oil, with recoverable resources estimated to be between seven and 11 million standards cubic metres of oil equivalent.

The company’s senior vice-president for exploration in Norway Nick Ashton said: “It is inspiring to see how creativity, perseverance and new digital tools result in discoveries that form the basis for important value creation, future activity and production in accordance with Equinor’s climate ambitions.”

The oil discovery at Røver North has added to the many discoveries made in the Troll/Fram area in recent years such as the Echino and Swisher discoveries in 2019 and 2020 respectively.

Recoverable oil from these discoveries can match up to the total production from fields such as Valemon, Gudrun and Gina Krog.

Following Røver Nord, the Blasto and Apodida prospects in production licence 090 are expected to be drilled.

Ashton added: “The discovery is a direct consequence of thorough subsurface work in the Troll/Fram area over many years and shows the importance of not giving up, but starting over, looking at old issues from new angles. Exploration thus creates great values for society, at the same time as the resources can be realised in accordance with the requirements for CO₂ emissions through the value chain, from discovery to consumption.”

Drillings were carried out in exploration well 31/1-2 S and appraisal well 31/1-2 A in production licence 923, around 10km north-west of the Troll field.
