The midstream subsection of the industry covers activities in the transport, (rail, road, pipelines, barge or tanker) processing and storage of petroleum products.
Typically, once crude has been extracted from the oil well, it is transported via pipelines to a flow-station and then to an oil tanker for transport where it is sold to another party or offloaded into storage or pumped directly into a refinery.
In Nigeria, the exploitation of Gas and management of same is also referred to as midstream activity.
Companies operating within the midstream subsector in Nigeria include Aiteo, Total Nigeria Plc, ExxonMobil and a host of others. Essentially, all the Upstream companies that own their own pipelines and oil tankers are in this category, however, there are some companies that are not involved in Exploration and Production but own midstream facilities
